The poem by Glenn Colquhoun titled “Lament” has a melancholic mood that conveys the idea of sadness and grief that the author is experiencing . The longing and grief for someone who passed away was effectively conveyed with the use of figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, and personification. Colquhoun also used repetition in his poem in order to emphasize the idea of grief and his longing for “buck”. She also used a listing in order to tell us that her life will be different now that she lost her loved one.
Colquhoun uses simile to compare one thing into another thing with different kinds, for instance “seagulls flock like angels in the distance” it seems like she imagined that seagulls are like an angel that reminds him of “buck” now that he passed away.
Another technique the author used is repetition, she constantly repeating “Buck has gone out fishing” this line was supported/followed by other figurative language (simile, metaphor, and personification) that effectively conveys the sadness and feeling of disappointment of the author and emphasize that buck is now gone and will never come back.
She also used listing in the poem “the forest is short one ordinary tree, or of there is laughter missing from the night, like one more gap in a row of teeth” these lines also conveys the feeling of sadness and grief of the author that tells us her life will never be the same the way it was now that buck passed away.
